Marble Mung - A book review
I was invited to share this book, by Rachel Baxter- Tam, with my mindfulness club at school. We were looking at making worry pets as part of the clubs activities, so I felt this book would fit right in with our focus this week!
Marble is a little puppy whippet, embarking on a life-changing journey. This means leaving his mother and heading on an adventure to his new home far away with his human family. The book explores how Marble adapts to his new environment and whether love can conquer sadness.
The book is written with some French dialogues, so would suit bilingual children or children learning French or English as a second language. It also has mindfulness tools within the text to help children to understand where such techniques as breathing, affirmations and having a positive mindset can fit into different situations within daily life.
The children I read the book to loved the illustrations. They commented on how much they liked the French vocab (our Year 4's especially as they are enjoying learning French in school) and how they thought the breathing exercises could help them in tricky moments too. What enthralled them most is the fact that Marble is a real dog and seeing the photographs at the back of the dog made them all smile!
Personally, from a Mindfulness perspective, I would gladly use this book again in my sessions to help children to understand how breathing and positive mindset are fantastic tools to help them with their wellbeing.
