Writing in the buff!

The other day, I found myself intrigued by an article from the BBC explaining how a Bournemouth Library would be holding it's first ever Naked writing workshop as part of the Bournemouth Literary festival this month. It was something I had never even realised was a thing, but it turns out "stripping off to get inspired" is an actual tried and tested writing method!

Upon further reading, I have discovered that many a famous author has stripped off in the pursuit of writing the perfect piece. Victor Hugo apparently asked his servant to take away his clothes and leave him with nothing but a pen so that he was given no choice but to write and Ernest Hemingway used to stand up naked with his typewriter at waist height to create a masterpiece!! Even Agatha Christie used to write in the bathtub!!

Now whilst I am in no hurry to strip off and start writing in my little writing room starkers, (and totally scarring my children for life!) I am intrigued as to how this method of writing worked for these authors. It seems there are many quirky ways that authors have managed to find their writing flows and I have found myself wondering if I should have a ritual or quirk which will have me find my writing flow easier?

Perhaps writing in the buff allows the mind to be completely free to express itself, with no barriers to prevent the words from seeping through.....but surely completely freezing if writing in the winter in this manner!! I am not always consistent with the way I write. Sometimes I sit in my front room with my notebook, sometimes I am in bed with said notebook and other times I am sat as I am now, freely writing straight onto the laptop whilst sat in my writing room "which I probably should have not decided to do as all I see is the mess around me!!)

Whatever ritual or quirk will find me one day for writing, I welcome it freely........but for now I am thinking I will give naked writing a swerve!
